James Gray: Much of the large open countryside seen in these two photographs is now Withdean Stadium – note the railway line and the bridge over Tongdean Lane at the far right. In the 1900s this was the playing field of the Brighton and Hove Grammar School. These photographs of the Edwardian period show competitors and relatives at two of the school sports, years unknown. One wonders how many of these young lads survived the later 1914-18 war? Beyond the trees in this photograph, note the extensive Valley Drive and Redhill Drive district. jgc_34_160

2020: Brighton and Hove Grammar School used this field (named Marshall’s Field after Ebenezer J Marshall, the headmaster from 1861 to 1899) from October 1902 until the summer of 1917. Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club moved here in 1999 from its temporary home at Gillingham and stayed until the end of the 2010/11 season, when the club gained promotion to the Championship. It moved to the brand new Amex Stadium at Falmer for the start of the 2011/12 season. In the 2020 photograph, which looks north-east, a light grey train on the London to Brighton line can just be seen on the extreme right, passing over the Tongdean Lane bridge. The large building to the left of the red and cream Brighton & Hove No 27 bus, which can be seen peeping out above the stands in the centre left of the image, is the The Sportsman pub. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
