EAST HOVE

Wilbury Grove

Neighbourhood:
Central Hove
1930
2018

James Gray: Horses and riders leaving Victoria Riding Stables, in Wilbury Grove in 1930. These premises at No 2, were at the Wilbury Road end of these mews, originally consisting entirely of stables for the nearby fashionable houses in Wilbury Road and the Drive. jgc_11_119

2018: This quiet cobbled side street, originally known as Wilbury Stables, is part of the Willett Estate Conservation area and has retained much of its charm. Although the horses are long gone Wilbury Grove is still a mixed use community, with offices, business premises and private dwellings side by side.

The old Victoria Riding stables have been converted into No 1 Wilbury Grove. The next-door building glimpsed to its right, with the dormer window in the roof, is No 3. The green-painted house with a satellite dish on the extreme right of the 2018 photo is No 2. (Photographer: Alison Minns)
