WILBURY AVENUE

Wilbury Avenue

James Gray: View westwards along the north side of Wilbury Avenue, taken from near the junction with Wilbury Villas. These large semi-detached houses were built at the turn of the century and were occupied by professional people, doctors, solicitors and the like, each with one or two servants. By the 1970s having outlived their original purpose they attracted the attention of the property developer as a good site for the inevitable blocks of flats, and so the first four, 63-69 were removed early in 1973 with this intention. Date of photograph – May 17, 1970. jgc_17_024

2018: The two pairs of houses demolished in 1973 were actually Nos 61-67. The block of flats seen here on the far left of the picture is Aynsley Court, which was built on the site. No 69 still stands on the corner with Wilbury Villas. It is now Hamilton House Day Centre for the disability charity Scope.  This image shows the scaffolding for a small block of flats as yet un-named, currently being built in its garden. (Photographer: Helen Glass)
