TIDY STREET – THE GAS FITTERS ARMS

Tidy Street

Neighbourhood:
North Laine
1890s
2018

James Gray: Yet another of Brighton’s taverns which has long since disappeared. Tidy Street was built in the 1840s and No 33 seems to have been a public house from the start. In the 1850s it was known as the Brazen Star (an unusual name) but assumed its later name a few years afterwards. It was delicensed in 1922, since when it has been a private dwelling. Year of photograph unknown – could be 1890s or 1900s. jgc_25_226

2018: The Gasfitters’ Arms, which must have been very small, has been a private house for nearly 100 years now. The downpipe to the left, the distinctive frontage and the shape of the doors are all still evident in this contemporary photograph. (Photographer: Chris Nichols)
