James Gray: Half way up the street, with the corner of Sussex Terrace just visible at the extreme left. Further up on the same side was Apollo Terrace, now completely demolished, and beyond can be seen Council houses built on what was known as Tarner’s Land. This was a large plot of ground between Sussex Street and Richmond Street, owned for many years by the Tarner family who lived nearby in St John’s Lodge, Tilbury Place. In 1932, the Corporation built three new roads of Council houses on this land, so it is safe to say that the photograph dates from that year. The old houses here seen on both sides of the street were demolished in 1938/1939. jgc_27_010
James Gray: At the top of this steep hill, showing houses between Lennox Street and Queen’s Park Road. Most of the these, including the tall Tower House, have since been demolished. jgc_27_021
2018: The Tower House was built by local trader Edwin Tarner in the mid/late 1800s. Allegedly he used the tower as a viewpoint to give him early sight of his ships on their return from the Americas. The site is now occupied by Pilot House flats (these are set back somewhat from the road) and a car park. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

2018: The London Arms survived longer than Tower House, eventually closing in 1964. See also jgc_027_021 above. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
