James Gray: This ancient block of 7 flint houses was unknown to most old Brightonians and the present generation has probably never heard the name. They were to be found well down Sussex Place, at the foot of Richmond Street and backed on to the houses of Grand Parade. The origin of the name [Chalk Farm] has been lost in obscurity though there may well have been a farm near here at the end of the 18th century. Photographed in 1919, the year in which they were demolished. jgc_27_015

James Gray: Few people knew of the existence of these buildings, which were hidden from view in the triangle formed by the top ends of Albion Hill, Richmond Street and Liverpool Street. A narrow lane approached them from 116 Albion Hill, which is still there but now leads to a modern bungalow. Chate’s Dairy was established here in the 1860s and the cows were grazed on land across Albion Hill, where Grove Street is now.
