LEWES ROAD

Stony Mere Way

Neighbourhood:
Falmer
1870s
2018

James Gray: To see how little some of our roads have altered, compare these two (and following) photographs of the road up to Falmer, just beyond the entrance gates to Stanmer Park.  jgc_28_220

2018: Ironically the widening and rerouting of the A27 in the 1970s and again a few years later has left the original road (now called Stony Mere Way) by the entrance to Stanmer Park looking much more rural again. Compare this to the photo of the extremely busy four lane road which is now the A27 (jgc_28_221) taken from near the entrance to Sussex University. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: About 85 years separate this and the previous photograph, which dates from the early 1870s and this from 1958. jgc_28_221

2018: See caption for jgc_28_220 above.  (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1890-1900
2018

James Gray: The neighbouring churches of Falmer and Stanmer. The prints were taken from the old glass plates of unknown age so the period cannot be authenticated. Probably this was between 1890 and 1900. jgc_33_114

2018: No apparent changes to Falmer Church but the trees have grown up around the pond thus blocking the view. See also jgc_33_120 and 121 for other images of Falmer Church and jgc_33_113 for the neighbouring Stanmer Church. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

James Gray: Two photographs of the lodges flanking the entrances were taken about 1950. jgc_33_116

2018: The two lower lodges of Stanmer Park are substantially unchanged apart from the removal of the second chimneys on the outer sides. The lodges were Grade II listed in 1954. The remains of the park gate have now gone. See also jgc_33_117 and 125. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

James Gray: See caption above. jgc_33_117

2018: The right-hand lodge is substantially unchanged apart from the removal of the second chimney on the right. See also jgc_33_116 and jgc_33_125. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

1890
2018

James Gray: Church and pond, Stanmer Village. The date of this photograph is 20 May 1890, the same as those on the previous page [jgc_33_118 and 119]. jgc_33_120

2018: No apparent changes to the Stanmer Church but the trees have grown up around the pond, blocking the view. See also jgc_33_114 and 121. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

2018

James Gray: Church and pond, Stanmer Village. This view is said to be of 1870 vintage, but I have my doubts. Perhaps the trees, which screened the church, had been removed by 1890, but this seems unlikely. jgc_33_121

2018: See also jgc_33_114 and jgc_33_120. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

James Gray: This and the next photograph [jgc_33_126 on the Stanmer Park page] are of the period 1900-10. The entrance to the park is little changed today, more than 50 (c1960) years afterwards. jgc_33_125

2018: The two lodges are substantially unchanged although the park gate has gone. See also jgc_33_116 and 117. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)
