
James Gray: South entrance to the Level, then completely enclosed by railings, in 1905. The low building erected in 1862 was at first a Police Station. It was later diverted to other purposes and demolished in 1929 when the southern section was converted into a children’s playground. jgc_20_023
2018: There is now a vegan cafe near the south entrance to The Level and the perimeter railings have gone. The building on the far right of the original photo, in Waterloo Place, has been replaced by the 5-storey Phoenix Gallery and arts centre. (Photographer: Eleanor Price)
