James Gray: Judging by the newness of the building probably taken in the 1870s. jgc _26_195.
2018: Work on the building of St Michael’s Place began in 1867. It looks today much as it did at the end of the nineteenth century. The houses in the forefront of both the 1870s and 2018 photographs are Nos 11 and 12 Montpellier Villas. (Photographer: Tony Bailey)
James Gray: This photograph, from St Michael’s Place, shows the building of the new church about to commence. After some 30 years the enlargement of the original church became necessary, but Mr Bodley did not wish to undertake the work. Mr William Burges designed the new church, which was begun in 1893 and opened in 1895. It took the form of a new nave, north aisle and chancel, to which the original building serves as south aisle and chapel. The addition of the “new church” involved the destruction of Mr Bodley’s north aisle. jgc_26_194
2020: The view of St Michael’s from St Michael’s Place is now dominated by the Burges addition. The original Bodley church can be seen peeping out on the right. (Photographer: Tony Bailey)
