SALTDEAN - THE EARLY YEARS

Saltdean Vale

Neighbourhood:
Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Saltdean
1923-24
2019

James Gray: The construction of the original Saltdean Vale, about 1923-24. This rough chalk road was put down across farmland running past Newlands Barn. The chalk was dug from a nearby hill and run out to the site on these trucks drawn by a petrol engine, supplied by Hartley and Midgley Ltd., the Brighton motor engineers. jgc_32_173

2019: This area is also known as Saltdean Oval (from its shape). Control of Saltdean Vale was taken over by Brighton Corporation in 1961. The roadway that ran across the park was diverted and a public park was created. Newlands Barn was converted to residential use in 1983. Today, Saltdean Barn (shown in the current photo) is a listed building and stands in a small public garden at the north end of the park. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
