James Gray: Two photographs of what was popularly known as the Dogs home, at the corner of Robertson Road and South Road. This was founded by two of the Misses Gregory of Withdean Lodge in the London Road in 1884. It was then known as The Sussex Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs and the original building (see left in the following photograph) was then almost at the edge of open country. jgc_26_071
2018: In 1993 the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals acquired the site at the corner of Robertson Road and The Drove for a new pets’ hospital. Further improvements were made to the building in 2011. See also caption to jgc_26_072. (Photographer: Jane Southern)
James Gray: This and the previous photograph show what was popularly known as the Dogs home, at the corner of Robertson Road and South Road. This was founded by two of the Misses Gregory of Withdean Lodge in the London Road in 1884. It was then known as The Sussex Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs and the original building was then almost at the edge of open country. The later building to the south dates from 1939. By then the premises had been taken over by the National Canine League but as long ago as 1981 it was announced by the league that they were seeking a site for larger and more modern premises. Accordingly I had these photographs taken on 5 April 1981 though the buildings did not come down until 1992. jgc_26_072
2018: A large tree almost obscures the premises of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals built in 1993 at the corner of Robertson Road and The Drove. Number 4 Robertson Road, in the foreground in both images, has changed externally very little since 1981 but is now divided into flats. See also caption to jgc_26_071. (Photographer: Jane Southern)
