James Gray: Although this building [the House of Nine Skulls] was in Robert Street, it was actually the back wall of premises in Kensington Street. In the middle of last century, these were occupied by Messrs Cheesman as a builder’s workshop and various theories have been put forward to account for these unusual objects. The most popular of these is that a boiler explosion occurred here and that the bodies of the nine men killed by it were found in a ring, eight with their heads pointing towards the centre of the ring and the ninth lying in the opposite direction. The heads were thereafter carved in the wall by Mr George Cheesman. The building was demolished in 1934 and the site used for the extension of the Southern Publishing Company’s premises. jgc_25_179
