James Gray: Three photographs (jgc_09_061, 062 and 063) taken in June 1930. These and several others of the same size in my collection, were exhibited in the window of Savage & Co’s Chemist shop at 109 St. James’ Street and shoppers were invited to say where the scenes were to be found in Brighton, three cameras being offered as prizes. The twitten leading from Little East Street into East Street, probably already about 150 years old, is still there and will be for many more years yet. jgc_09_062

2019: The unnamed twitten in the original photo not only survived but became one of the most famous twittens in the world when in 1979 it was the setting for a sex scene between actors Leslie Ash and Phil Daniels in the film Quadrophenia, set in Brighton in the 1960s, the period of the Mods and Rockers. Since then it has been officially renamed Quadrophenia Alley and is visited by fans from all over the world. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
