Providence Place

Neighbourhood:
New England area
1966

James Gray: This view looks along Providence Place on 27 November 1966. Part of this narrow street has now been stopped up to provide extensions to some of the stores in London Road. jgc_25_258

2018: The southern end of Providence Place has seen significant change. The left-hand side has been cleared to make way for an open central green area between the new housing in St Peter’s Street and what remains of Providence Place. Losing almost half its length, the street now ends at the graffiti-clad wall beyond which are storage buildings supporting some shops in London Road. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)

James Gray: This small, cramped Church of England School, in Providence Place, was built in 1874 and demolished in 1975. The two photographs [jgc_25_263 and 264] were taken on 9 September 1973. jgc_25_263

2018: The original site of the school has now been transformed into a multi-functional site. The left-hand image is taken from New England Street looking east across the old site of the School, which has been replaced by London Road Car Park with the new St Bartholomew’s Primary School Sports Court on its roof. The right-hand image looks west from the other side of the original School site in Providence Place, capturing all that remains of the small building to the right of the original photograph. James Gray: This is a view of the rear of the premises in Providence Place, prior to reconstruction. Date of this photograph is 9 February 1964. jgc_10a_079

James Gray: Looking along this narrow street from Cheapside end to St Bartholomew’s Church and Ann Street, with the backs of the houses in St Peter’s Street at the left – 7 March 1964. What few private houses there were in this street were in that section to the north, facing the side wall of the church. jgc_10a_083

James Gray: St Bartholomew’s Church, period unknown, perhaps about 1913. jgc_30_096

2023: The c1913 photo was taken looking north up St Peter’s Street towards St Bartholomew’s Church (now Grade I listed) in Ann Street. In 2023 the northern section of St Peter’s Street is pedestrianised, and the roadway diverts to the east to join the remaining section of Providence Place, seen here on the right leading to Ann Street. The modern day photo was taken outside No 6, St Peter’s Street. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
