James Gray: The date of this photograph is not known, but it is thought that it was taken in the period 1958/61, a view that is supported by the almost complete absence of motor vehicles in the residential streets. Nos. 83 & 84 Gloucester Road, facing south at the corner of Over Street which looks through to Trafalgar Street. jgc_25_188
2018: Decorative panels on the upper floors of the corner building as shown in the original photograph still exist but are somewhat obscured by modern yellow paint. On the adjacent building, the bays to the upper floors have been removed and some changes made to the shop front below. (Photographer: Geoffrey Kavanagh)
James Gray: Behind Frederick Place is the strangely named Over Street, dating from the same period, the late 1840s. The rear of the houses on the east side of this street are built right up against the tiny cottages of Trafalgar Terrace and can be seen in these small photographs. In this view from Trafalgar Street, looking south to Gloucester Road. jgc_25_231
2018: Over Street was named after the local builder, Thomas Over. It is difficult to produce an accurate, updated photograph of this view as the newer buildings fronting Trafalgar Street have obscured the backyards between Trafalgar Terrace and Over Street. Here is a view of the backs of some of the houses on the eastern side of Over Street today. (Photographer: Chris Nichols)
James Gray: See caption for jgc_25_231 above. This shows the view in the opposite direction, towards Trafalgar Street and the Station. jgc_25_232
2018: Again, it is difficult to replicate the original view because Gray’s photograph appears to have been taken by someone leaning out of an Over Street back window. This modern photograph shows the northern entrance to the Trafalgar Terrace cottages with the Over Street houses in the background. (Photographer: Chris Nichols)
