James Gray: This photograph looks westwards along North Street, period uncertain, but when this was a busy shopping street serving a population that lived in the small neighbouring streets. In the distance is the Baptist Church, now demolished. The area has now been completely depopulated, the shops have gone, and the sites used for industrial purposes. jgc_38_005
2018: The description is unchanged. (Photographer: Jeremy Knight)
James Gray: A copy of a very old photograph, showing Portslade Mill, probably in the 1860s. It was thought to have stood just above North Street, and may have been part of Red House farm, some of the other buildings of which are also seen. It was demolished in the 1870s. In the distance were the trees which adjoined St Leonards Church in New Church Road, Hove. jgc_38_004
2018: None of the buildings in the 1860s picture still exists. The Windmill pub was built on the site of the old Copperas Gap mill at the corner of North Street and West Street. This view is of that site, long demolished and now commercial premises, looking north-east in the direction of St Leonard’s Church. (Photographer: Jeremy Knight)
