James Gray: Nile Street dates from the late 18th century, being named after the Battle. Originally it consisted of small private houses, some of which are shown here. Gradually the street became commercialised, and in 1889 these houses were demolished, the site being absorbed into the business premises. The corner premises, now occupied by Walter Gilletts were then the premises of Waterfield & Co., wholesale & retail stationers. jgc_08_063
2019: Three views of Nile Street in 2019 – Originally known as St Bartholomew’s Lane, Nile Street was renamed following Nelson’s victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile on 1 August 1798.
James Gray: After the 1889 demolition of the small houses seen on the previous [photographs], the business premises were extended along the full length of Nile Street, as shown on this photograph of 1956. After a life of nearly a century, they were removed in 1987 when all Walter Gilletts were demolished for redevelopment. jgc_08_065.
