James Gray: Compare this scene of desolation with the drawing of the house and garden, shown on the previous page [see jgc_29_102 below]. There had obviously been an extension of the house to the south and the garden had, for many years, been covered by these old garages. Photographed on 6 December 1964, these buildings were demolished just a few weeks later. jgc_29_104

2020: The actual site of these buildings is now an underground car park. Like neighbouring Blucher Place and Wellington Place, Milton Place ran east-west and lies buried beneath the current development. There are no traces of Milton Farmhouse, which was situated at the western end of the cul-de-sac. The hut with the corrugated tin roof on the left (south) of Gray’s image would have stood approximately at the north-west corner of the shopping centre. James Gray: When these two photographs [jgc_29_097 and 098] were taken about 1935, Milton Place was still a private road. The years had passed lightly over this quiet cul-de-sac built about 1820. jgc_29_097

James Gray: The side walls of houses in Wellington Place can be seen abutting on to the old flint wall shown on the left. With demolition of Wellington Place and Blucher Place in 1938, and the consequent use of the cleared site as a Corporation car park, the seclusion of Milton Place was disturbed. About this time, the wooden gate was removed. jgc_29_098

James Gray: The quiet solitude of this old cul-de-sac, in 1950. A few years later and all the buildings had gone. Now, in 1965, there is just a vast crater ten feet deep covering the whole area as part of the West Street redevelopment. jgc_29_099

James Gray: A rear view of Milton House, Clarence Street, as it appeared in 1842. This is a photograph of a drawing by Mrs Tupper, mother of Martin Tupper, Poet and Author, who lived in this house from 1841 until 1844. The house still stands though very much changed and much of the large garden is now covered with garages and similar outbuildings. Additional Information: See following. jgc_29_102

James Gray: 6 and 7 Milton Place, photographed in August 1955. One by one these little cottages were closed and then demolished. No 9, the last to be removed, in February 1961, faced directly on to the garden of Milton House, seen previously [jgc_29_102]. The cleared area was added to the Russell Street car park. jgc_29_103

James Gray: Compare this scene of desolation with the drawing of the house and garden, shown on the previous page [jgc_29_102]. There had obviously been an extension of the house to the south and the garden had, for many years, been covered by these old garages. Photographed on 6 December 1964, these buildings were demolished just a few weeks later. jgc_29_105

James Gray: [1957-58.] No comment. jgc_29_119

James Gray: Another view of the car park, looking due west to Clarence Street along the cleared site of Milton Place. The backs of the tall houses in Grenville Place are on the right. Period about 1962. These two sites are now swallowed up in the large Churchill Square shopping precinct. It would be a bold man who could identify the spots where the photographer was standing. jgc_29_130
