James Gray: Taken soon after the hotel was rebuilt in 1866. Note the newness of the façade. The kerbside railing is without the cross members which were added later. The premises which we now know as the Salisbury Hotel, 143-145 Kings Road, the other side of Bedford Square, were then three separate houses. jgc_01_023 and jgc_01_024

James Gray: This photograph taken in 1883 shows how little the external appearance of the buildings has altered over the years. Certainly the railings have gone, electricity has replaced gas, and the roadway has been cleaned up, but note that two ornamental lamps can still be seen outside the Norfolk Hotel to this day. jgc_01_028

James Gray: I would say that this photograph is several years earlier than the other one of the hotel (jgc_01_028) and probably dates from the middle 1870s. Two of the graceful houses west of the hotel were later rebuilt in the ugly late Victorian style – see previous photograph. jgc_01_030
