CHANGING HOVE

Fourth Avenue

Neighbourhood:
Central Hove
1972
2018

James Gray: Two houses 5 and 7 Fourth Avenue, lately occupied as the Seven Hotel, photographed on 22 October 1972, while awaiting demolition. After years of dereliction, flats known as Oliver House have been built here. jgc_13_085

2018: The houses shown in this image had functioned, with varying degrees of commercial success, as privately-owned hotels under various names, including Kent House and the less creative Seven Hotel.  As noted in the original description, both were demolished in 1972-73 and the relatively modest six-storey block of flats called Oliver House erected in their place. The buildings on either side remain unchanged, with a mixture of styles from different periods of development. Evidently car parking was a problem then as it is today. (Photographer: David Sears)
