James Gray: View across Warren Road to the Ridgeway, 1954. This was just before the post-war building boom in Woodingdean gathered momentum. Most of the empty spaces have since been filled. Additional Information: Woodingdean Laundry; Hairdresser. jgc_33_051
2018: The view from Warren Road looking across to The Ridgeway, showing Falmer Road in the foreground. Very little free space remains today. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
James Gray: This view shows two of the few roads then existing on the Downs Estate and they give a good illustration of the types of dwelling occupied by the early settlers. Downs Road has since been widened and renamed Falmer Road. jgc_33_083
2019: A view down Falmer Road, with modern bungalows on one side and an industrial estate on the other. The photograph was taken from where the old Wick Farm would have stood. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
James Gray: About 150 yards further north, but on the other side of Falmer Road, were these kennels. They were south of Crescent Drive South but above Brownleaf Road. They remained here until the 1914-18 War. Afterwards several houses were built here fronting Falmer Road, and Brownleaf Road was laid out. jgc_33_103
2019: The kennels were replaced by Brown’s Egg Farm during the Second World War. Following the development of the southern reaches of Falmer Road and Brownleaf Road, all that remains now is modern housing. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
James Gray: This single decker bus on its lonely journey up Falmer Road from Rottingdean, with only a horse and trap for company. The bus was just a few yards short of the crossroads and the year about 1928. It can be seen just how haphazard and sporadic was the building then along this now busy road. jgc_33_110
2019: Looking down Falmer Road from just south of the crossroads. Buses only go as far as the adjoining Cowley Road today and the traffic is a great deal busier now than it was in 1928. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
James Gray: A very early photograph, probably 1920. Today the busiest corner in Woodingdean, it shows the junction of Downs Road (now Falmer Road) with Warren Road. In the background the dirt tracks are the Ridgeway and Balsdean Road. By the wooden tub is the standpipe and tank, then one of the few sources of fresh water, from which the nearby residents fetched their water in pails. jgc_33_078
