James Gray: Oxen ploughing on the Downs to the west of the road (not visible in the photograph) 28 June 1892. This area is just below the present Downland Drive. jgc_36_025
2018: This photograph was taken a few yards from Downland Drive, looking north-east. Thick vegetation now covers the area but the greatest change can be seen in the distance, where the A27 Brighton Bypass crosses the scene. Work on this long-awaited section of road eventually started in 1989 and was completed in 1996 when the Southwick Tunnel opened. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
James Gray: The site of this rural scene, at about the same year, 1910, can easily be found today (1978). It is at the far end of Downland Drive, just beyond the modern West Blatchington School, where the path takes a turn towards Brighton and Hove Golf Course. jgc_36_080
2018: The South Downs and the golf course are no longer accessible from this side path. Instead, there is a footbridge further to the west of the school along the main path, taking pedestrians and cyclists over the A27 Brighton and Hove Bypass. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
