CROWN STREET

Crown Street

Neighbourhood:
Western Road area
1968
2019

James Gray: Of all the streets which turn out of the north side of Western Road, this is the only cul-de-sac. It is hard to account for this unless the large house at the top of, and facing down the street was deliberately built to face the sea and prevent any exit into Upper North Street. Certainly for some years this was called Sea View House, and was privately occupied before being reconstructed for business purposes. This little street was laid out in the 1830s and at the same time as Western Road and lost a few houses on each side at the lower end in the 1920s when the road was widened.

Photographed on 8 December 1968, many of the houses seen were demolished within three months. It is intended to use the cleared space for an extension of the large business premises at the foot of the street. jgc_19_078

2019: Some of these cottages and other buildings were demolished at the beginning of 1969 to make way for an expanded store which had been British Home Stores from 1932-1969 but was soon to become C&A and is now part of the Primark store. The remainder of the 19th century terrace is now Grade II listed. (Photographer: Denise Taylor)
