James Gray: After the buildings of the Junior School of Brighton College, in Eastern Road, had been demolished a large area of wasteland (formerly gardens) was left at the rear. Adjoining the empty site was this large house, Clarendon Lodge, built at right angles to the other houses in Clarendon Place and facing College Place. With little clearance at the back it had a substantial front garden. For several years there was controversy about what should be done with this valuable town site; should it be left as an open space or built on. Housing for the elderly is being built now, 1983.
