GOLDSTONE WATERWORKS

Chartfield

Neighbourhood:
West Blatchington
1978
2018

James Gray: Across the narrow country lane (now widened Woodland Drive) stood for many years an area devoted to the storage of heavy pipes and other equipment owned by the Brighton Water company, who were also the owners of this valuable land. With the establishment of Southern Water, the land became available for building development.

This photograph and jgc_36_009 were taken on 25 June 1978 when, after removal of large quantities of chalk, contractors were engaged in putting in the roads. The finished development is now known as Chartfield. In the distance are houses in Nevill Way. jgc_36_008

2018: The 2018 view shows the completed development, known as Chartfield, which extends westwards from its junction with Woodland Drive towards Nevill Way. The two modern houses facing Hove Park on either side of the entrance to Chartfield are known as 2 and 3 Chartfield Way (1 Chartfield Way is out of shot to the left of No 2). The rooftops of the houses on the east side of Nevill Way can still be seen in the background. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)

2019: The two houses on the left have addresses in Chartfield. The one on the right, with a new rear extension completed in February 2019, is  3 Chartfield Way, a section of Woodland Drive that faces the north end of Hove Park.

The rooftops and chimneys of a pair of houses in Nevill Way can be seen in the background. The distant electricity sub-station in the 1978 photo, to the right of the Nevill Way houses, is still there in 2019, but no longer visible from here. The access to it is from Nevill Way. Both views are to the north-west from the south side of Woodland Drive. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
