James Gray: Looking south to Carlton Hill. March 1928. The winter sun touched only the east side of this squalid street. It was lit by only three lamps, one at each end and one in the middle of the street, all attached to the walls of the houses. jgc_24_108
James Gray: Looking north to Sussex Street. March 1928. The winter sun touched only the east side of this squalid street. It was lit by only three lamps, one at each end and one in the middle of the street, all attached to the walls of the houses. jgc_24_109
James Gray: This dingy street turned from Carlton Hill at No.13 and ran North to Sussex Street. No less than 55 houses were crammed into this short distance. The photograph makes the street look much longer than it was. The site is now covered by Milner Flats, built in 1934-1935. jgc_24_103
