HOLLINGDEAN ESTATE

Burstead Close

James Gray: About 1923 Brighton Corporation nurseries were moved from Lewes Road to Lower Roedale, on part of the old Harrington Farm. They remained until 1960 when they moved again to Stanmer Park. For several years the site was empty and overgrown, but now, in 1968, it is proposed that council dwellings will be built here. If so, the cottage seen here will likely be removed. This was previously two separate cottages occupied by workers on Harrington Farm. Date of photographs – 28 January 1962. jgc_20_113

2019: Looking north from the corner of Brentwood Road, Mimosa Court now stands on the footprint of the demolished cottage. It is one of several blocks built in the newly-created Burstead Close. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)

2019: View from Burstead Close standing alongside Mimosa Court, the block of flats built on the site of the original cottage. Just to the immediate right of the flats, in the middle distance, is a glimpse of the back of 124 Stanmer Villas. This house sits on the corner of the row of houses seen to the far left in the original image. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)

James Gray: Four photographs of the late 1950s [jgc_20_122 and 124 on the Golf Drive page, jgc_20_123 on Brentwood Road and jgc_20_125 on this page] which show in greater detail some of the buildings which were occupied by the Corporation’s Parks Department. No further comment necessary. jgc_20_125

2019: It is no longer possible to gain an overall ground level perspective on the landscape seen in the original photograph. This image captures the transformation following the development of Burstead Close. (Source: Google Earth)

James Gray: The flats of Bursted Close under construction, in January 1970. They were built on part of the site of the large Roedale Nurseries, cleared in the late 1960s, and the distant trees are clearly seen in photographs on nearby pages. jgc_20_126

2018: The location of the original photograph of 1 and 2 Burstead Close is now occupied by Mimosa Court. (Photographer: Andrew Renaut)
