BOYCES STREET

Boyces Street

Neighbourhood:
Old Town
1870
2019

James Gray: The old cottages on the left must have been removed when Middle Street school was reconstructed and extended in 1875. The large private house in Middle Street, then No.44 is now the site of the Hippodrome Palm Court. jgc_08_010

2019: The Union Charity School that replaced the buildings in the earlier image was in its turn demolished and rebuilt as Middle Street Primary School in 1973. The northern end of the Hippodrome is clearly visible at the far end of the street. See also jgc_08_011 and 025. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1954
2019

James Gray: Compare this with the photograph on the previous page. The roadway is very little wider, despite the passage of 85 years. jgc_08_011

2019: See caption for jgc_08_010. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1947

James Gray: 10 Boyces Street, photographed in 1947. This surely must be one of the smallest houses existing in Brighton, having a frontage of only a few feet. jgc_08_024.

2019: Standing next to The Fiddlers Elbow public house, seen on the right,  the tiny building at 10 Boyces Street still stands. A stamp dealers after being a leather workers, it is apparently still occupied but does not now seem to be used for commercial purposes. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1902
2019

James Gray: Middle Street school in 1902.  jgc_08_025

2019: The school buildings in the original photo were demolished and rebuilt as Middle Street Primary School in 1973. Although the new buildings must offer a lot more in the way of modern conveniences, the shoe box vernacular style of architecture lacks something of the grace of its Edwardian ancestor.
