James Gray: Houses on the east side, numbered 19-31, between Monmouth and Malvern Streets, 29 June 1969. Most of these were removed in the clearance for the car park but for some reason two houses, 29 and 31, were left and they now stand alone. jgc_14_159
2018: The original photo, taken in 1969, shows numbers 19 to 31 on the east side of Belfast Street, facing north, between Monmouth Street and Malvern Street. All the houses have since been demolished: numbers 19 to 27 to build a car park. The car park and the remaining two houses, numbers 29 and 31, have been replaced by the additional buildings constructed in 2017-18 for St Andrew’s School. (Photographer: Ivor O’Mahony)
James Gray: 54 and 56 Blatchington Road, together with four houses in Belfast Street, 33 and 39, were demolished in 1964. On the large cleared site was built the new Tesco store, opened at Easter 1965. These streets were laid out in the 1870s. Blatchington Road, from George Street to Belfast Street, was formerly called Conway Terrace. Most of these premises were shops from the start, whereas from Connaught Terrace to Sackville Road all were, at first, private houses. The two photographs were taken early in 1964. 2018: The No Entry sign on the left is the exit from Malvern Street. The pub beyond the four cars parked on the left is on the south corner of where Monmouth Street used to join Belfast Street. The area previously occupied by the gasometer is now the site of a Tesco superstore on Church Road. (Photographer: Ivor O’Mahony)
