NORTH ROAD AND NORTH PLACE

Barrack Yard

Neighbourhood:
North Laine
1978
2018

James Gray: The purpose of these recently taken photographs is to record the site of the new Baths for the Brighton Corporation, still in course of construction at end of 1980. This view in North Road, shows the entrance to the old swimming baths, built and opened in 1895. The building in the left foreground is almost certainly a part of the Infantry Barracks that was occupied by the military until the 1860s. Photograph dates from 28 June 1978. jgc_25_176

2018: These images are of Barrack Yard, a small roadway off the bottom of North Road, named after the infantry barracks that once ran from Church Street to North Road. In the 2018 photograph, the rear of the Prince Regent Swimming Complex can be seen where the original North Road Public Baths once stood. The North Road baths closed in November 1979 and the Prince Regent complex (entrance in Jubilee Square) opened in April 1981. The buildings on the left (east) of the images once housed the North Road Slipper Baths (1870-1976) providing bathing facilities for the poor. Today, they are home to the Purple Turtle Wellbeing centre and to the council-run Bright Start Nursery. (Photographer: Geoffrey Kavanagh)
