James Gray: The view of the abandoned permanent way, on either side of the bridge, looking towards Lewes Road Viaduct. jgc_27_124

2019: This was also the site of the short lived Hartington Road Halt which was open from 1906 to 1911 on the Kemptown railway line. The area is now occupied by William Clarke Park which was opened in the 1980s. William Clarke was a former Mayor of Brighton who campaigned for this open space to be created. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: The reverse view to the tunnel under Elm Grove. The School buildings are on the skyline. The last train (a special one) ran on this line on 26 June 1971, for the benefit of railway enthusiasts. All four photographs date from 9 April 1972. jgc_27_125

2019: The foreground of the photograph is the western end of William Clarke Park, opened on the site of this part of the railway line in the 1980s. Only the tunnel’s far portal remains accessible within the fenced grounds of one of the industrial units in the Freshfield Industrial Estate. The portal at this end has been demolished. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

Part of the viaduct and arches, then still standing, can be seen in the distance. The small houses are those on the east side of Melbourne Street, formerly known as California Cottages. Date 28 October 1979. jgc_27_131
