SCENES IN HOVE RECREATION GROUND

Hove Recreation Ground

Neighbourhood
Hove Park
1908
2019

James Gray: No comment. Additional Information: Drumhead Service in Hove Recreation May 24, 1908. jgc_17_044

2019: Hove Recreation Ground is used for football, rugby and cricket matches. It is popular with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers. The Old Rec Cafe in the restored gatehouse is friendly and quaint. (Photographer: Jane Cheema)

1923
2019

James Gray: This photograph speaks for itself. The year is 1923 and in the background are houses in Shirley Drive. Just above the straw-hatted judge can be seen the entrance to Shirley Road, then containing but one bungalow. Additional Information: 4th Annual Sports, Hove Elementary Schools 1923. jgc_17_057

2019: View looking east to Shirley Drive. (Photographer: Jane Cheema)

1919

James Gray: The early aftermath of World War 1. Above is the scene in Hove Recreation Ground in July 1919, on the occasion of the official Peace Celebrations held within the Borough. Additional Information: “Children’s Peace Celebrations, Hove. 1919”. jgc_17_058

2019: View looking east from Hove Recreation Ground to Shirley Drive. (Photographer: Jane Cheema)

1926-27
1913-14
2019

James Gray: A football team grouped together at the north west corner of the field, in 1926-7. In the background are three recently built houses in Hove Park Road, the present Nos 69, 71 and 73. The photographer slipped up badly over the name of the team. This was in fact Hove Swifts, a junior team of this period. jgc_17_056

James Gray: Hove Trade Football Club grouped in either Hove Park or Hove Recreation Ground. I favour the latter because little or no football was played in Hove Park until after the 1914/18 War. Additional Information: Hove Trade Football Team, 1913-1914. jgc_15_122

2019: View looking north to Hove Park Road. Hove Recreation Ground is the home of Hove Rugby Football Club. As well as the Men’s 1st XV there are Women’s 1st and 2nd XVs and several boys and girls teams. (Photographer: Jane Cheema)

Pre 1910
2018

James Gray: Four early photographs of Hove Recreation Ground and Hove Park. Three of these date from before 1910, while the fourth is probably of the 1920s. Additional Information: The Enclosure, Hove Park. jgc_17_042

2018: The pre-1910 photo was taken in the original Hove Park, now called Hove Recreation Ground. The Enclosure is the centrepiece of Hove Recreation Ground, next to the central buildings, on the west side of the Hove Rugby Club clubhouse. The circle of trees remains, although some are missing. The central tree, the shrubbery hedge, the fencing, the benches and the hard surface have all gone. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
