Zion Gardens

Neighbourhood:
Central Brighton
1960
2019

James Gray: When this photograph of Zion Gardens was taken on 15 March 1956, three of the seven cottages were boarded up and I imagined the houses would soon be demolished. They are still here 10 years later, in 1966! the street was so named as it led to St Nicholas. jgc_31_105

2019: Directly facing the backs of the shop buildings on the west side of Queen’s Road, the houses of Zion Gardens are not blessed when it comes to their situation, and the decidedly unglamorous row seen in the old picture has been replaced by a smaller and even more modest little terrace. Beyond them the rear of the St Nicholas Lodge flats can be seen, instead of that of the old Throat and Ear Hospital. Both views look north through to the houses of Church Street. (Photographer: Mathia Davies)
