YORK ROAD

York Road

Neighbourhood:
Brunswick, Western Road area
c 1900
2018

James Gray: Looking from Western Road up the full length of this, then, quiet middle-class residential road. It looks like a professional photograph, and one wonders why it was taken. Period not known but likely to be early in this century. York Road today presents a vastly different appearance due to the traffic.  Additional Information: Horse and carriage.  jgc_11_014

2018: There are fewer trees lining the road today, but many cars parked on both sides of the road. It is still largely residential but a modern Co-op supermarket now stands on the corner of 130 Western Road and the former site of numbers 1-5 York Road. There is a car wash within the Co-op building, with access from the west side of York Road. (Photographer: Annie Drynan)

James Gray: Old houses and shops, at the corner of Western Road and York Road, photographed on 4 July 1971, prior to their removal for an extension to the Sussex Mutual Building Society’s premises, seen at the extreme left. These were the oldest buildings in Western Road, Hove. Hitherto known as the Western Road field, the house seen in York Road was commenced on 4 August 1850, and the others soon followed. Additional Information: Edmond’s Antiques, posters.  jgc_11_029

2018: The corner of Western Road and York Road is now the eastern boundary of an office block with a Co-operative supermarket at ground floor level. The supermarket runs across the entire block to the corner with Brunswick Road. (Photographer: Annie Drynan)
