James Gray: This road was projected in the 1930s but for many years the lower portion below Shirley Drive remained undeveloped and the road was lined with deep furrows. The name, Tredcroft, like many others in this district, is derived from a former landowner. Date of photograph, 21 November 1954. jgc_17_113
2018: The three homes on the extreme left of the 1954 photo are still easily recognisable but, in 2018, the first bungalow has a black and white, mock Tudor look, while the next bungalow has acquired a dormer window in the front roof. The jogger in the distance pinpoints the crossroads of Tredcroft Road and Benett Drive in 2018. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
James Gray: These two photographs [see also jgc_17_111 on the Benett Drive page] were taken on 15 December 1952, when the foundations for the first house were being dug. The houses in the background are those of Tongdean Avenue and Shirley Drive. jgc_17_112
2020: The 1952 view shows the line of what is now the continuation of Benett Drive sloping up from right to left in the centre of the photo. In the background on the skyline are from left to right the current 139, 137, 135 and 133 Shirley Drive.
James Gray: This area was just about the last part of the vast Stanford Estate to pass into the hands of the builders. On this plot of land, then under cultivation, were later built Bennet Drive, Bennet Avenue and Shirley Avenue. These photographs [see also jgc_17_117 on the Goldstone Crescent page] were taken from Shirley Drive in June 1954. jgc_17_116
2020: Beyond the cultivated land in the south-facing 1954 photo are the backs of properties in Tredcroft Road, which meets the bottom of Woodruff Avenue on the far right.
