TREDCROFT ROAD

Tredcroft Road

Neighbourhood:
Hove Park
1954
2018

James Gray: This road was projected in the 1930s but for many years the lower portion below Shirley Drive remained undeveloped and the road was lined with deep furrows. The name, Tredcroft, like many others in this district, is derived from a former landowner. Date of photograph, 21 November 1954. jgc_17_113

2018: The three homes on the extreme left of the 1954 photo are still easily recognisable but, in 2018, the first bungalow has a black and white, mock Tudor look, while the next bungalow has acquired a dormer window in the front roof. The jogger in the distance pinpoints the crossroads of Tredcroft Road and Benett Drive in 2018. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)

1952
2020

James Gray: These two photographs [see also jgc_17_111 on the Benett Drive page] were taken on 15 December 1952, when the foundations for the first house were being dug. The houses in the background are those of Tongdean Avenue and Shirley Drive. jgc_17_112

2020: The 1952 view shows the line of what is now the continuation of Benett Drive sloping up from right to left in the centre of the photo. In the background on the skyline are from left to right the current 139, 137, 135 and 133 Shirley Drive.

The 2020 photo was taken in Tredcroft Road from approximately the same position, looking north-north-east. The junction with Benett Drive is just beyond the four vehicles parked on the left. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)

1954
2020

James Gray: This area was just about the last part of the vast Stanford Estate to pass into the hands of the builders. On this plot of land, then under cultivation, were later built Bennet Drive, Bennet Avenue and Shirley Avenue. These photographs [see also jgc_17_117 on the Goldstone Crescent page] were taken from Shirley Drive in June 1954. jgc_17_116

2020: Beyond the cultivated land in the south-facing 1954 photo are the backs of properties in Tredcroft Road, which meets the bottom of Woodruff Avenue on the far right.

The 2020 photo looks the opposite way, northwards, from the gable-fronted houses in Woodruff Avenue included in the 1954 image. In the centre background can be seen a glimpse of the grey rooftops of recently redeveloped houses in Benett Drive. Properties in Tredcroft Road run from left to right, up the hill. The road continues across Benett Drive and Shirley Drive, to finish at its junction with Tongdean Avenue. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
