TAMWORTH ROAD

Tamworth Road

Neighbourhood:
Westbourne
1913-19
2018

James Gray: A blown-up copy of a photograph of this modest road, looking north from Portland Road to the railway and the “cattle creep” under the line which can be seen in the far distance. It is older than one would think, the first houses having been built in the late 1890s. Others followed from time to time.

On the empty ground to the left was later constructed the small Stoneham Recreation Ground. Opposite can be seen the entrances to Suffolk Street and Montgomery Street, the local shops being in this area along with many more houses. The period of the photograph cannot be determined. Probably just before or just after the First World War. jgc_16_024

2018: The trees growing in Stoneham Recreation Ground dominate in the middle distance. This amenity has improved substantially in recent years. The shop to the right has long gone and is now residential. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)
