Sussex Square

Neighbourhood:
Kemptown
c1900s
2020

James Gray: A good view of the gardens which were laid out by the botanist, Henry Phillips, in 1828. The year of the photograph is not known but is thought to be in the early years of this century. Mowing the large area of grass must have been a tiring job in those days even with a machine pulled by an animal. Additional Information: The square has long been the residence of the rich and famous. Perhaps most famous was Rev Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, who lived at No 11. Also Antony Dale, founder of The Regency Society. jgc_23_060

2020: The buildings, certainly their neoclassical façades, are unchanged over the past 120 years. The main difference is in the contents of the garden enclosure. Trees have taken over from what were once flower beds and shrubs and now obscure much of the western side of Lewes Crescent and Sussex Square.  (Photographer: David Jackson)
