BRIGHTON STATION

Surrey Street (Brighton)

Neighbourhood:
Brighton Station area
1936-37
2019

James Gray: Looking towards the station from Surrey Street, and showing the recently widened breakthrough from Queen’s Road. The exact year is not known but it seems likely to have been in the mid-1930s, probably 1936 or 1937. jgc_31_075

2019: The Brighton Station building, the roof of the train shed behind it and porte-cochère in front of it look the same in 2019 as they did in 1936-37.

The clock is now hidden behind a tree and the Southern Railway sign must have been taken down when the railways were nationalised in 1948. The station has been listed Grade II* since 1973. The main changes are to the road layout. Following an improvement scheme completed in 2015 there is now a one-way system up the (now narrower) Surrey Street, across Junction Road and down Queens Road. Taxis pick up and drop off passengers under the porte-cochère of the station. The area from the building itself to the bus shelter behind the blue car is pedestrianised. There is a bus shelter in front of The Railway Bell pub (extreme left). There are more seats, and trees have been planted. (Photographer: Jane Southern)
