Surrenden Road (1)

between Preston Drove and Harrington Road

Neighbourhood:
Withdean
1969
2018

James Gray: When St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church was built here in 1912 a large tract of adjoining land was left undeveloped. It might have been intended for some other church buildings, but whatever the reason was the area was merely used for allotment gardens for nearly 60 years. It was certainly over-ripe for development when it came to the market in 1969.

Further views of the vacant land bounded by Surrenden Road, Harrington Road, Harrington Villas and St Mary’s Church [jgc_20_187, 188 and 190]. Here the view is to the overgrown bank leading up to Surrenden Road, showing the side of No 25. jgc_20_189

2018: The disused land to the north of St Mary’s being used as allotments in 1969 was developed into Surrenden Lodge flats. This view, looking up the slope to Surrenden Road, shows the garages built to accompany the flats. The ground level hasn’t changed and an access ramp runs down from the road in the left of the picture, next to the house. (Photographer: Robert Dawes)
