SITE OF BRIGHTON LOCOMOTIVE WORKS

Stroudley Road

Neighbourhood:
Brighton Station area
1970
2019

James Gray: 107 years after the photographs [jgc_31_081 to jgc_31_087] on the preceding pages were taken, here is a view of the cleared site of those long engine sheds. The first locomotive was built at Brighton in 1852 and more than 1200 were subsequently built in these works. With the passing of the steam [engine], the buildings became redundant and were removed in the summer of 1969. These photographs [jgc_31_088, 089 and 090] were taken from a vantage point in Howard Place on 22 March 1970.

At the time of writing, nearly three years afterwards, this site of nine acres is still little used except for car parking, but must surely be put to some more profitable use ere long. jgc_31_088

2019: This modern image shows the northern part of the cleared site where the Brighton Locomotive Works once stood. From 1971 the area was used as a station car park until in 1997 the land was sold to the New England Consortium and eventually became part of a sustainable urban neighbourhood, the New England Quarter. In 2005 the car park seen on the right of the 2019 image was completed. Stroudley Road (named after railway engineer William Stroudley) lies on the other side of it. The two linked buildings dominating the photograph are the new site to which Bellerbys College, which offers a wide range of pre-university programmes suitable for international students, moved in 2007. The viaduct prominent in the James Gray image can just be glimpsed to the left of them. See also captions for jgc_31_089 and 090 below.(Photographer: Jane Southern)

2019: jgc_31_089 is a continuation of jgc_31_088 but further to the south (right). The 1970 photograph shows Vantage Point (on the left) at the corner of New England Street and New England Road, and New England House, further along New England Street. In 2019 these are obscured by Bellerbys College and Jurys Inn (opened in 2008) which lie along Stroudley Road. See also captions for jgc_31_088 and 090. (Photographer: Jane Southern)

2019: jgc_31_090 is a continuation of jgc_31_089 to the south (right) with some overlap. The building prominent in the 1970 image housed railway company offices. Now a non-elevated section of the station car park stands on its site. In the James Gray image the misty bulk of St Bartholomew’s Church can be seen top right. In 2019 its roof is just visible over the top of City View, the office building to the right (south) of Jurys Inn. The 2019 image does not extend as far west as the earlier one as it is no longer possible to peer directly over the wall at the top of the cliff below Howard Place. (Photographer: Jane Southern)

James Gray: A nostalgic look back to the heyday of the railway and the age of steam. Taken between 1900-1904. It shows a west bound train rounding the curve just before the New England Road bridge. jgc_ 31_050

2019: This image is taken from the railway bridge over the west coast line, just below the junction of New England Road and Howard Place. The Combined Engineering Depot seen in the 2019 image was built in 1966 in the triangle of land bounded by the Brighton main line, the west coast line and New England Road. The earlier buildings there, now demolished, included the long ‘new shed’ seen in the 1900-1904 image. This also shows, in the background, the locomotive works which were demolished in 1969. The white buildings in the 2019 image are those along Stroudley Road, namely Bellerbys College (opened 2007), Jury’s Inn (2008) and City View (2016). Those beyond are in Fleet Street.
