THE BLACKMAN STREET AREA

Station Street

Neighbourhood:
Brighton Station area, North Laine
1962
2018

James Gray: The three remaining streets included in this comprehensive clearance scheme. Station Street, looking North, 29 April 1962. All the old houses up to Brown Bros shop have since been demolished.  jgc_25_241

2018: Now unrecognisable from the original image dated April 1962.

All the buildings in the original photograph have been demolished and replaced by Villiers Court flats to the left & GB Liners Self Storage Unit on the right hand side with Britannia House offices just behind that. The building work at the end of the street will be offices with retail units on the ground floor scheduled for completion in March 2019. James Gray’s ‘three remaining streets’ were Station Street, Pelham Street and Cheapside. All three have survived. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)

James Gray: Twenty years on! Station Street, looking north, on 29 May 1983. Compare this with the photograph of the street on 29 April 1962 [jgc_25_241 above]. The old large depository building now stands, empty in 1989. jgc_25_248

2018:  The building that housed Mays Antiques in the right foreground remains unchanged although no longer an active business. Behind that lies GB Liners Self Storage. The building site on the far end of the street will be offices with ground floor retail space scheduled for completion in March 2019. The Station Car Sales Rooms on the left have now been replaced by Villiers Court apartments. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)
