PRESTON PARK STATION

Station Road (Preston)

Neighbourhood:
Preston
Date unknown
2019

James Gray: The focal point of this photograph is the Station Master’s house, now gone. I do not know when this was built or when it was removed, though this was not long ago, possibly around 1970 when the station was reconstructed. The Station was opened on November 1st, 1869, and the house was provided for the senior official soon afterwards. It would look out of place with the gaunt appearance of the rebuilt Station. Date of the photograph – unknown. jgc_18_214

2019: A view from Station Road looking south towards the top (west) end of Clermont Road. Trees have now grown tall, casting heavy shadow along the perimeter of the garden that used to belong to the Station Master’s house. The white building, 18a Clermont Road, seen at the end of the road is currently occupied by Brighton Consulting Rooms. The large brick building in the centre of the modern image can just be seen in the middle distance of the earlier photo. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)

James Gray: At the time when these photographs [jgc_18_216, 217 and 218] were taken on 9 February 1975, Preston Park Station was undergoing change, from a Victorian structure of charm to its present bare appearance. Since then the temporary huts and part of the wooden railings have gone.

Houses and garages have been built along the west side of Station Road, there has been some further development on the opposite side and many of the splendid trees fell victim to the storm of October 1987. Most of the visible changes have been to the foreground area, but beyond the lorry the lane leading to Withdean Stadium is little changed, apart from the loss of some trees. Another view. jgc_18_217

2018: Many trees were lost in the October 1987 hurricane but the pathway remains. To the left on the western side of Station Road housing has been built. No 24 is decorated with decorations for Halloween which has become very popular in recent years. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)
