COURT FARM, WEST BLATCHINGTON

St Peter's Close

Neighbourhood:
West Blatchington
c 1890
2018

James Gray: At the time when these photographs were taken about 1890, West Blatchington was a remote hamlet about a mile from the nearest houses. The large trees in the left distance were on the site of the present Nevill Avenue. jgc_36_036

2018: The barn on the right in the 1890s photo has gone, and the Blatchington Windmill is now passed on both east and west sides by Holmes Avenue.

The blocks of flats forming The Mount housing development are on the left in the 2018 view. The path in the foreground leads from Holmes Avenue to the east entrance to St Peter’s Church. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)

James Gray: Ancient cottages and the east wall of Court Farm House. The path led from the old drove way to the farm buildings behind the house. jgc_36_037

2018: The site of the c1890 path is now the parking area alongside Alexandra Court, situated off Holmes Avenue. This retirement development was built by McCarthy and Stone in 2000. The green roof of St George’s Catholic Church in Court Farm Road is just visible through the trees in the background. Over on the left are the flats of The Mount, which stand on the site of Court Farm House, demolished in 1955. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
