James Gray: A not too well known Victorian cul-de-sac, leading from St James’s Street to St Mary’s Church Hall, it took its name from the neighbouring church. It was built about 1855 by a local builder, J. B. Colbran, who occupied one of the houses himself. I had this photograph taken for me on 16 January 1966, as there was talk of redevelopment, but it was not until mid-1978, twelve years later, that this block of eleven houses was demolished, along with those seen in the following photograph. [See also jgc_22_021 on the St James’s Street (2) page.] jgc_22_020

2018: The entire terrace of houses has been demolished and a new complex, Malthouse Court, erected further up the street. Opposite the (St Mary’s Church) railings is now a parking area at the back of Somerset Day Centre. The second photograph shows the railings and the steps at the far left in greater detail. (Photographer: Guy Shanley)
