Shirley Street

James Gray: A parade of newsboys in front of Webb’s Newsagents and Tobacconists shop, at 52 Shirley Street, in 1916. One wonders if this number of boys were needed to deliver only Mr Webb’s papers or if they were gathered together just for the purpose of this photograph. jgc_14_088

2018: No 52 Shirley Street is now a private house.

The door has been altered but is in the same position. The shop windows have been replaced with a bay window overhung with red tiles and the long-toothed lintel above the shopfront has gone, although its continuation may still be seen on the next-door house, No 54. Newsboys and girls are rarely seen in the 2020s. (Photographer: Alison Minns)
