James Gray: When Withdean Stadium was laid out in the 1930s, a large field was left between the perimeter of the Stadium and the houses in Tongdean Lane. This had long been known as Shepherd’s Croft, ever since William Roe’s time in the 18th century. In 1957 this field was sold for building and these two photographs show road making in progress. The first houses were occupied in 1958. jgc_34_176
