James Gray: The baker’s shop of J W Hoskins, at 60 Rutland Road, at the corner of Suffolk Street, in 1913. In various ownership, this was a baker’s shop for many years. jgc_16_016

2018: The corner shop has been converted to residential use and the corner entrance blocked up. It has been replaced with a more conventional front door on the Suffolk Street side of the building although the address remains 60 Rutland Road. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)

James Gray: Near the foot of Rutland Road was built in 1899 the Rutland Hall, as a branch of Cliftonville Congregational Church. It comprised a hall, a schoolroom and a caretaker’s house, which cost in all £3,200! The photograph shows it still in almost new condition. jgc_15_135

2018: Still in use as a place of worship and with its original terracotta signage of “Rutland Hall” above the entrance this is today the West Hove Community Baptist Church. Its architect was W H Nash. (Photographer: Steve Agace)
