WOODINGDEAN

James Gray: These photographs [jgc_33_097-101], taken on 4 January 1953, show the site of Brighton’s new South Woodingdean Council House Estate, as it was before development started. The somewhat derelict bungalows shown were mostly built before 1928, before the area was absorbed into the Brighton Borough and, therefore, not subject to the Borough byelaws. This view is of the Woodingdean ‘pre-fab’ estate, built shortly after the close of the 1939-1945 War. jgc_33_099

2019: The prefabs in the original photograph were factory-made in Bristol and transported by road to Woodingdean. Apparently they were very well equipped, having a refrigerator, large electric cooker, hot water, back boiler, an enormous garden and a good size corrugated Nissen hut type of shed. They were replaced by modern council houses in the mid-1960s. The Google aerial view shows the area as it is today. The open area in the original photograph is now Woodingdean Central Park.  The other photos taken on 4 January 1953 can be found on these pages – Old Parish Lane (jgc_33_097), Norton Drive (jgc_33_098), ?? (jgc_33_100) and Crescent Drive South (jgc_33_101). (Photographer: Google)
