RIFLE BUTT ROAD in 1925

Roedean Road

Neighbourhood:
Eastern Brighton
1962
2018

James Gray: On the left the John Howard Home for Nurses and in the distance the Bristol Gate flats. jgc_23_124

2018: Gray’s photograph shows the John Howard Alms Houses (for former nurses) behind some disused allotment land. That tussocky patch of land is now the site of a substantial residential development that obscures the Nurses’ Home from view, although the Bristol Gate flats are still just visible in the distance. The John Howard Cottages, as they are now known, were refurbished in 1994 and are beautifully preserved. (Photographer: David Jackson)

James Gray: This is an interesting photograph of Roedean Road, from near where Roedean Crescent now turns off to the left. It was taken in the year 1925 when this was still a quiet country road, though it was the coast road from Brighton to Newhaven. jgc_23_150

2020: To the left of the 1925 photograph was the East Brighton Golf Club which is still there today. Apart from road markings, little has changed over the past 95 years. The entrance into Roedean Crescent is just visible in the modern photograph near the second lamp post on the left. (Photographer: David Jackson)
