EASTERN BRIGHTON

James Gray: The curve into Rock Street, from Eastern Road, showing the backs of houses in Lewes Crescent. jgc_23_040

2019: The buildings shown in Gray’s picture are little changed today, partly because they form the backs of houses in Lewes Crescent and Sussex Square that have all, since the early 1950s, been Grade I Listed. The main difference is traffic: what was an empty street in the 1930s is now full of parked cars and a Brighton Bikeshare Hub – a 21st century version of a 19th century mews, perhaps. (Photographer: Alice Jackson)
